A Story to Tell – Growth with Growgreen

4 layers paper straws

Background:

Around the second half of last year, a customer contacted Growgreen inquiring about 4-layer D10mm paper straws with a length of 30cm. Since this is an uncommon size, our sales representative informed the customer that it would require a pre-order with a minimum quantity of 20,000 straws.

The Customer:

During the process of working with us, the customer asked very detailed questions about the technical specifications and product standards. We often joked that we were only working with this one customer all day long.

The Order:

Eventually, the customer agreed to place an order. Although they initially promised to order a large quantity on a monthly basis, their first order was only for 10,000 straws (half of the minimum quantity). After careful consideration, we decided to accommodate their request and produce 10,000 straws for their first order.

The Disappearance:

Two months passed after the delivery, and we didn’t hear back from the customer. We started to think that their project had failed and was not well-received by the market.

The Comeback:

To our surprise, the customer came back a month later and placed another order for 10,000 straws. We were relieved and happy for their initial success, even though the order quantity was still relatively small.

The Growth:

The following month, the customer placed another order, and this time we encouraged them to increase the quantity to 15,000 straws to make the production process more efficient. They agreed. The customer continued to place orders for 15,000 straws every month after that.

The Happy Ending:

And that is the story of how a customer who started with a small order eventually grew their business and became a regular customer of Growgreen. We are glad to have been a part of their success story.

Beside paper straws, we have many other eco-friendly straws and sustainable products.

The Advantages and Disadvantages Of Bamboo Straws.

Bamboo straws have become increasingly popular as a sustainable alternative to plastic straws due to their numerous benefits. Do you know the pros and cons of them? Let’s take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of bamboo straws.

The advantages of Bamboo Straws:

  1. Eco-friendly: One of the key advantages of bamboo straws is that they are made from a renewable resource. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, making it a sustainable choice. In contrast, plastic straws take hundreds of years to decompose, contributing to environmental pollution.

  1. Sustainable: Bamboo is an incredibly sustainable material. It requires no pesticides or fertilizers to grow, reducing the negative impact on ecosystems. Additionally, bamboo naturally regenerates, making it an environmentally friendly choice for those concerned about sustainability.

  1. Reusable: Bamboo straws can be reused multiple times, making them an excellent solution for reducing single-use plastic waste. They are also easy to clean and maintain, providing a convenient option for individuals looking to make a positive impact on the environment.

  1. Natural and Chemical-free: Unlike plastic straws that often contain harmful chemicals, bamboo straws are made from a natural material. This makes them a safer option for both humans and the environment. By choosing bamboo straws, you can avoid potential health risks associated with plastic straw usage.

The Disadvantages of Bamboo Straws:

  1. Limited Lifespan: While bamboo straws are reusable, they may not last as long as plastic or metal straws. Over time, they can become worn or develop mold if not properly cared for. However, with regular maintenance and proper cleaning, their lifespan can be extended.

  1. Absorbency: Bamboo is a porous material, which means it can absorb liquids. If bamboo straws are not thoroughly cleaned and dried after each use, they may develop staining or odors. It is important to clean bamboo straws properly to maintain their hygienic qualities.

  1. Size and Shape Variations: Due to the natural variations in bamboo, each straw may have slight differences in size and shape. While this may not be a significant issue for most users, it’s worth noting that some straws may not fit all types of drink containers. It is advisable to check the compatibility of the straw with your preferred beverage container.

  1. Limited Availability: Although bamboo straws have gained popularity, they may not be as readily available as plastic straws, especially in certain regions. This limited availability can make it challenging for some individuals to access and purchase bamboo straws. However, with the increasing demand for eco-friendly alternatives, the availability of bamboo straws is gradually expanding.

In conclusion, bamboo straws offer numerous benefits in terms of their eco-friendliness, sustainability, and reusability. They are an excellent choice for those looking to reduce their plastic waste and make more sustainable choices.

Despite their limitations such as a limited lifespan, absorbency, variations in size and shape, and limited availability, bamboo straws remain a viable and eco-conscious option.

By opting for bamboo straws, individuals can actively contribute to the reduction of plastic pollution, and promote a healthier environment and supporting small-scale farmers and artisans who are involved in the production of these eco-friendly alternatives.

Eco-friendly Straws to Replace Plastic Straws in Restaurants and Coffee Shops

plastic straws alternative for restaurants, coffee shops

As you know, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues. From 1950s, about 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced over the world and only 9% was recycled, the left end up in landfill or dump into the ocean.

Plastic waste kills 11 million seabirds and marine animals each year. Nearly 700 species of marine life are in danger of extinction.

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use plastic products — with severe environmental, social, economic and health consequences.

Aware of that fact, many countries and regions have banned some single-use plastic items such as: cutlery, straws, stirs – the small ones that hardly recycle.

In other countries, many restaurants and coffee shop have been acknowledging the severity of this issue and put an effort to minimize plastic waste from the smallest one – the plastic straws.

One simple step to cutting down on single-use straw consumption is telling servers not to put a plastic straw on the drinks. Of course, it is important to provide straws to consumers who ask for them or need them.

But in these cases, the questions are: What is the most environmentally friendly straw? What can I use instead of a plastic straw?

Are biodegradable straws really biodegradable? What are pros and cons of these eco-friendly straws? This article will answer these questions.

What is the most environmentally friendly straw?

The most environmentally friendly straw is no straw. ^^ Yeah, we all know that. But we’re talking about the situations when people need it. And in this case, we usually think about the eco-friendly straws that biodegradable, compostable or degradable.

As oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com, a substance or chemical that is biodegradable can be changed by the action of bacteria to a natural state that will not harm the environment

Compostable that can be made into compost. Compost: a mixture of decayed (= destroyed by natural processes) plants, food, etc. that can be added to soil to help plants grow

Degradable that can be broken down into a simpler form.

That’s why biodegradable and compostable straws are better than degradable.

Which straws that biodegradable and compostable? What are pros and cons of these eco-friendly straws?

There are many disposable eco-friendly straws for restaurants, coffee shops such as: paper straws, bamboo straws, edible rice straws, grass drinking straws. Each has pros and cons:

Our Planet is Choking On Plastic and 9 Things We Can All Do to Beat Plastic Pollution

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use plastic products — with severe environmental consequences.

Around the world, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed for single-use purposes – used just once and then thrown away.

Plastics and microplastics are now ubiquitous in our natural environment. They are becoming part of the Earth’s fossil record and a marker of the Anthropocene, our current geological era. They have even given their name to a new marine microbial habitat called the “plastisphere”.

We have seen a lot of positive action, but the truth is that we all need to do more and turn off the tap on plastic pollution at the source.

There are many things that you as an individual can do – from asking the restaurants you visit to stop using plastic straws, to bringing your own coffee mug to work, to pressuring your local authorities to improve how they manage your city’s waste. Take the Clean Seas pledge and adopt new habits to limit your plastic footprint.

For inspiration, here are 9 things we can all do to #BeatPlasticPollution for #CleanSeas:

1.    Clean a Beach: If you live near a coastline, join beach clean-ups in your area. Or take your family along on a beach walk and start your own clean-up.

2.    Clean a River: 80% of marine litter originates from land and rivers drain plastic waste into the oceans. Join a river clean-up or do your own! The river will look nicer and benefit its ecosystem and the ocean.

3.    Quit Smoking: Did you know that smoking contributes to the plastic that enters the ocean? For over 25 years, cigarettes butts have been the top item collected during the International Coastal Cleanup.

For over 25 year, cigarettes butts have been the top item collected during International Coastal Cleanup

4.      Shop Sustainably: Next time you are out shopping, choose food with no plastic packaging, carry a reusable bag, buy local products, and refill containers to reduce your plastic waste and effect on the environment.

5.    Try a Zero-Waste Lifestyle: Become a zero-waste champion. Invest in sustainable, ocean-friendly products- reusable coffee mugs, water bottles and food wraps. Consider options like menstrual cups, bamboo toothbrushes and shampoo bars. These will help you save money and the ocean too.

6.    Travel Sustainably: When you are on holiday, try to watch your single-use plastic intake. Refuse miniature bottles in hotel rooms, take your own reusable drinking bottle and use reef-safe sunscreen, without microplastics

7.    Be an advocate for change: Ask your local supermarkets, restaurants and local suppliers to ditch plastic packaging, refuse plastic cutlery and straws, and tell them why. Pressure your local authorities to improve how they manage waste.

Say NO to plastic straws and cutlery when you don’t need it.

8.    Dress Sustainably: The fashion industry produces 20 per cent of global wastewater and 10 per cent of global carbon emissions. That’s more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. “Fast fashion” is so last year. Consider sustainable clothing lines, vintage shops and repair your clothes when possible.

9.    Choose plastic-free personal care products: Personal care products are a major source of microplastics, which get washed into the oceans straight from our bathrooms. Look for plastic-free face wash, day cream, makeup, deodorant, shampoo and other products.
